Het stormt en regent maar door. Toch beslissen we om op pad te gaan naar Cape Leeuwin (Australiërs spreken dit uit als LLuwin). Bij aankomst daar blijkt het vandaag een feestdag te zijn. 400 jaar geleden werd Cape Leeuwin ontdekt door Nederlanders. De entree vervalt vandaag en in Augusta blijken allerlei festiviteiten gevierd te worden in het community centre. De Nederlandse ambassadrice gaat er zelfs om 11.30 een praatje houden!
Cape Leeuwin is het meest Zuid-Westelijke puntje van Australië. Let wel: niet meest Zuidelijke en niet meest Westelijke! Er staat een vuurtoren op, die vanaf 1896 zijn licht over de Zuidelijke én Indische Oceaan schijnt, zodat schepen zich niet op de rotsen te pletter varen.
Na het winderige intermezzo op Cape Leeuwin rijden we, nieuwsgierig als we zijn, toch nog even naar Augusta om de ambassadrice mee te maken. Het Community Centre zit afgeladen vol. De praatjes zijn nogal saai voor ons, dus we besluiten al snel weer verder te rijden. We luisteren niet eens meer naar het optreden van het chantikoor, wat bij onze aankomst in Augusta onder het afdak van de kerk aan het inzingen was.
Het weer is nog steeds beroerd. We gaan via Cave Road, de weg langs alle grotten, naar Margaret River. Onderweg komen we als eerste Jewel Cave tegen. Top, een binnenactiviteit. We gaan naar binnen en willen ons aanmelden voor de rondleiding over een half uur. Helaas! Uitverkocht! We kunnen ons nog wel aanmelden voor de volgende rondleiding over anderhalf uur. Dat doen we. Ondertussen veraangenamen we het wachten met een potje duizenden (kaartspel) in ons droge campertje.
Jewel Cave is prachtig. Stalagtieten en stalagnieten in allerlei soorten en maten. Hans was hier 30 jaar geleden met zijn zus ook nog. Toen stond er helemaal onderin nog een meer, met zo’n 1,05 meter water erin. Nu staat het droog en wordt geschat dat het water zich ongeveer 1,05 meter onder de bodem bevindt………… Bizar om je dat te realiseren.
