Maandag: we gaan naar Monkey Mia. Hier hadden we ons enorm op verheugd. Een boattrip waar we dolfijnen, dugongs (zeekoeien) en schildpadden kunnen zien.
Bij aankomst was het voedertijd voor de dolfijnen. Ze zwemmen daar vrij rond en krijgen twee keer per dag een paar visjes. Dit doen ze om ervoor te zorgen dat de dolfijnen naar het strand blijven zwemmen voor de toeristen.
Zo wonderlijk hoe ze in kniediepwater heen en weer zwemmen, bijna op het strand. Er waren 6 dolfijnen aanwezig, waarvan 1 moeder met kind……aaaaaaah!
Tegelijkertijd kwam er een zeeschildpad lucht happen vlakbij de brug waar we op stonden. Dat ging zo snel dat we die helaas niet konden fotograferen.
De Aristocat 2, een catamaran, werd ons vervoermiddel voor de komende twee en een half uur. We moeten nog wel even vermelden dat de wind, precies vandaag, heel sterk was, 30 knopen oftwel bijna 60 km/uur. De catamaran was gelukkig stabiel en Margaret en Beppie hadden gelukkig reistabletten op. Het was zonnig, maar door de wind voelde het fris aan.
Nadat we een aantal groepen dolfijnen in het water gepasseerd waren (wat een feest!) zetten we koers naar een gebied met zeegras, het voedsel van de dugongs. Door de heftige wind was het water troebel, waardoor we niet echt in het water konden kijken. Gelukkig zijn dugongs zoogdieren, die om de paar minuten lucht moeten happen. Het werd dus luchthappende dugongs spotten. We hebben er flink wat gezien, inclusief moeders met kalfjes. De foto’s zijn niet echt duidelijk, windkracht 5 en bewegend schip en 2 seconden telkens om foto te maken, maar we hebben we gezien
